Applying Learning Analytics in Online Environments: Measuring Learners’ Engagement Unobtrusively

Prior to the emergence of Big Data and technologies such as Learning Analytics (LA), classroom research focused mainly on measuring learning outcomes a small sample through tests. Research online environments shows that learners’ engagement is critical precondition for successful lack associated with failure dropout. LA helps instructors track, measure visualize students’ behavior use digital traces improve instruction provide individualized support, i.e., feedback. This paper examines 1) metrics or indicators extracted displayed by LA, 2) their relationship academic achievement performance, 3) some freely available tools usability. The concludes making recommendations practice further considering challenges using in classrooms.
