Applying Mathematical Optimization in Practice

Abstract Applying mathematical optimization (MO) in industry is still very often done by MO experts. In this contribution, we use an outside-in approach to describe the key requirements for projects be successfully instantiated within businesses. We focus on development and usage of decision support tools operational, tactical, strategic planning. They are used business experts with little or no background optimization. These people experts, e.g., planning managing complex supply chains global production assets. While they open new methods, reality, many fail handed over them. discuss best practices overcome underlying challenges. Several findings can transferred future applications MO. arise around Industrial Internet Things (IIoT), particularly focused real-time applications, large, connected, interdependent systems.
