چکیده

Groundwater vulnerability assessment helps subsurface water resources management by providing scientific information for decision-makers. Rigorous, quantitative of groundwater usually requires process-based approaches such as flow and transport modeling, which have seldom been used large aquifer-aquitard systems due to limited data high model uncertainty. To quantify the regional-scale in East Gulf Coastal Plain Alabama, a three-dimensional (3D) steady-state was developed using MODFLOW, after applying detailed hydrogeologic characterize seven main aquifers bounded aquitards. The velocity field calibrated observed heads then applied calculate age residence time this 3D system via backward/forward particle tracking. Radioactive isotope (14C 36Cl) were calibrate backward tracking model. Results showed that shallow (<300 ft below table) southern Alabama is mainly Anthropocene (25–75 years) hence susceptible surface contamination, while deep (700 or deeper contain “fossil” waters may be safe from modern contamination if there no artificial recharge/discharge. Variable horizontal vertical maps reflect hydrologic conditions intermediate-scale architectures models. These large-scale flow/transport models with coarse resolutions reasonably broad distribution fluctuation ages, probably structures being captured reliably geology Parameter sensitivity analysis, vadose zone percolation time, wavelet preliminary extension transient also discussed support aquifer indexed ages Alabama.

Reactive transport of trace elements and isotopes in the Eutaw coastal plain aquifer, Alabama

[1] We integrate groundwater geochemistry, mineralogy, and numerical modeling techniques to study the reactive transport of heavy metals and isotopes in the Eutaw coastal plain aquifer, Alabama. Geochemical data show that the elevated concentrations of Fe, Mn, and Sr can be correlated with high pH and alkalinity. These geochemical correlations suggest that that elevated metal concentrations may...

Groundwater and microbial processes of Alabama coastal plain aquifers

[1] We integrate groundwater geochemistry, microbiology, and numerical modeling techniques to study the origin of elevated salinity and chemical evolution of groundwaters in the coastal plain aquifers of Alabama. Our field data indicate that chemical composition of groundwater evolves by various geochemical and microbial processes as it moves deeper into the subsurface. Sequential peaks of Ca, ...

Review of Analytical Studies of Tidal Groundwater Flow in Coastal Aquifer Systems

Since the 1950s, numerous publications of analytical studies of tidal wave propagations in coastal aquifers have been appeared. This paper reviews the following aspects: importance of tidal effects in studies of coastal areas, analytical studies of tide-induced groundwater flow and related case studies. Finally several important open problems in analytical studies of tide-induced groundwater fl...
