چکیده

Passive sampling has been shown to be a suitable procedure assess the risk of contaminated sediments through measurement freely dissolved concentrations (CFree) and remedial actions involving amendments such as activated carbon (AC). Here we report results application simple, solvent-free solid phase micro extraction methodology (SPME) performance different materials for remediation selected Norwegian harbour with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). AC enabled reduction availability PAHs and/or PCBs by factor ten over one hundred in Aker Brygge (Oslo) from Elkembukta, impacted industrial emissions with/from coal tar pitch. Another material, anthracite, slightly less effective this set experiment than AC, showed nonetheless great promise capping material. The SPME data are put perspective equilibrium measurements CFree organochlorines silicone rubber other Elkembukta collected vicinity those used experiments. A sediment Cfree pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene benzo[ghi]perylene inner on average 407, 6.3 0.82 ng L?1 values of/or below 1.3, 0.15 0.076 L?1, respectively can expected upon AC. For outer, sediment, would reduce 36, 0.81 0.13 value or 0.06, 0.03 0.005 these three compounds, respectively. Differences pattern PAH organochlorine contamination outer discussed.

assessment of the efficiency of s.p.g.c refineries using network dea

data envelopment analysis (dea) is a powerful tool for measuring relative efficiency of organizational units referred to as decision making units (dmus). in most cases dmus have network structures with internal linking activities. traditional dea models, however, consider dmus as black boxes with no regard to their linking activities and therefore do not provide decision makers with the reasons...

A passive sampler based on solid phase microextraction (SPME) for sediment-associated organic pollutants: Comparing freely-dissolved concentration with bioaccumulation.

The elevated occurrence of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and legacy organchlorine pesticides (e.g. chlordane and DDT) in estuarine sediments continues to poses challenges for maintaining the health of aquatic ecosystems. Current efforts to develop and apply protective, science-based sediment quality regulati...

Assessment of Sediment Remediation Potential using Microbial Fuel Cell Technology

Bio-electrical responses obtained from freshwater sediments by employing microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology were investigated in this experimental study. During the electricity generation, organic matter in the sediment was microbially oxidized under anaerobic conditions with an electrode serving as a terminal electron acceptor. It was found that the sediment organic matter (SOM) associated w...

Passive sampling in contaminated sediment assessment: building consensus to improve decision making.

Contaminated sediments pose an ongoing, pervasive, global challenge to environmental managers, because sediments can reflect a legacy of pollution that can impair the beneficial uses of water bodies. A formidable challenge in assessing the risks of contaminated sediments has been the elucidation and measurement of contaminant bioavailability, expressed as the freely dissolved concentration (Cfr...

Sampling for Passive Internet Measurement: A Review

Sampling has become an integral part of passive network measurement. This role is driven by the need to control the consumption of resources in the measurement infrastructure under increasing traffic rates and the demand for detailed measurements from applications and service providers. Classical sampling methods play an important role in the current practice of Internet measurement. The aims o...
