Atlantic Multidecadal Variability and North Atlantic Jet: A Multimodel View from the Decadal Climate Prediction Project

چکیده
Abstract The influence of the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) on North storm track and eddy-driven jet in winter season is assessed via a coordinated analysis idealized simulations with state-of-the-art coupled models. Data used are obtained from multimodel ensemble AMV± experiments conducted framework Decadal Climate Prediction Project component C. These performed by nudging surface Ocean to states defined superimposition observed anomalies onto model climatology. A robust extratropical response found form wave train extending Pacific Nordic seas. In warm phase AMV compared cold phase, typically contracted less extended poleward low-level shifted toward equator eastern Atlantic. Despite some features, picture an uncertain model-dependent emerges we demonstrate link between bias character response.

Predictability of North Atlantic Multidecadal Climate Variability
Atmospheric weather systems become unpredictable beyond a few weeks, but climate variations can be predictable over much longer periods because of the coupling of the ocean and atmosphere. With the use of a global coupled ocean-atmosphere model, it is shown that the North Atlantic may have climatic predictability on the order of a decade or longer. These results suggest that variations of the d...
متن کاملOn Multidecadal and Quasi-Decadal North Atlantic Variability
Observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the North Atlantic from 1958 through 2000, as well as data from an ocean model simulation driven with the atmospheric variability observed during the same period, are examined using multichannel singular spectrum analysis. The two leading oscillatory modes are associated with a multidecadal and a quasi-decadal period. The former is connected to a basi...
متن کاملSolar forcing synchronizes decadal North Atlantic climate variability
Quasi-decadal variability in solar irradiance has been suggested to exert a substantial effect on Earth's regional climate. In the North Atlantic sector, the 11-year solar signal has been proposed to project onto a pattern resembling the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), with a lag of a few years due to ocean-atmosphere interactions. The solar/NAO relationship is, however, highly misrepresented...
متن کاملMultidecadal North Atlantic Climate Variability and Its Effect on North American Salmon Abundance
[1] Climate variability is now known to play a key role in the abundance of marine fisheries, and must be accounted for to implement sustainable management strategies. We show that North American Atlantic salmon abundance has fluctuated in parallel with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO); a basin-wide, low frequency climate mode producing cold-warm-cold sea surface temperatures over th...
متن کاملA predictability study of simulated North Atlantic multidecadal variability
The North Atlantic is one of the few places on the globe where the atmosphere is linked to the deep ocean through air—sea interaction. While the internal variability of the atmosphere by itself is only predictable over a period of one to two weeks, climate variations are potentially predictable for much longer periods of months or even years because of coupling with the ocean. This work present...
