Attendance Without Presence: Measuring Cognitive Class Avoidance Among Students

While the term “school absenteeism” refers to a student’s withdrawal from reach of classroom instruction, we explicitly opt for “class avoidance.” Existing studies on this phenomenon have primarily dealt with unauthorized physical absence class. However, in our contribution, extend scope cognitive absence. The behavior students who are physically present but cognitively disengaged has largely been neglected educational research thus far. This deficit stands contrast widely accepted importance activation classroom. core contribution consists presentation and construct validation newly developed scale measuring class avoidance (inattention class). We evaluated measurement instrument cross-sectional study sample 171 seventh- ninth-grade (M = 14.3 years, SD .94). Our data confirmed theoretically founded g-factor model. results analysis point limited prevalence avoidance. Such forms were significantly more frequently reported by boys than girls, however.
