Autobiographical memory functions in the recall of authentic moments

Abstract Authenticity, or being true to oneself, relies on integrating autobiographical memories into a coherent life-story. These serve three adaptive functions: self-identity, social connection and directing behaviour in the future. But little is known about how memory subjective sense of authenticity interact. Using between-subjects experimental design, we compared authentic inauthentic moments with controls. Memories in/authentic events were more likely use self function less than In addition, noted trend for be controls directive function. results highlight importance an ecological approach as well potential value recalling experiences developing self.
