Ballistic Impact and Virtual Testing of Woven FRP Laminates

The aim of the work was to investigate numerical simulations correlation with experimental behaviour steel ball high velocity impact onto a 2 × twill woven carbon composite laminate. set up consisted pressurised gas-gun able shot projectiles two different plate layup configurations plates made same material fabric. Subsequently, experiments were replicated using LSDYNA explicit finite element analysis software package. Progressive failure models fidelity levels constructed. higher model simulating each plys panels separately, tied together cohesive zone modelling properties. lower single layer artificial integration points for ply. simulation results came out be in satisfactory agreement ones. While delamination extent moderately under predicted by model, general complying results. consistent representing damage panel during and better impactor residual velocities due matching pane stiffness. Despite competency capture laminate more detailed level, computational cost 80% than case, which rendered that impractical against one, use larger substantial or complex structures.
