Balloon guide catheters: use, reject, or randomize?

چکیده

Thrombectomy devices played an important role in the success of endovascular treatment trials over past five years. A balloon guide catheter (BGC) is adjunctive device used to arrest and reverse flow by inflating at its tip, which allows for reversal intracranial arteries during retrieval thrombectomy applying concomitant aspiration through lumen. Thereby, it can decrease risk clot fragmentation distal embolization. Despite numerous benchtop clinical observational studies showing superiority BGC conventional catheters improving reperfusion quality outcome, use still low practice. The reasons behind this reluctance might be related technical cost issues. Therefore, high level evidence data, i.e., a randomized trial, are needed increase implementation procedures. Nonetheless, several obstacles challenges prevent completion such efforts overcome them. We provide overview current opinions about BGCs neurointerventional community discuss feasibility possible trial answer question “should routinely acute ischemic stroke?”

Reuse of coronary angioplasty balloon catheters: yes or no?

In the last decade, the reuse of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) equipment has been repeatedly discussed in the cardiological and infection control literature. Interest in this problem is growing since the frequency of PTCA procedures is increasing and cost containment in health care has been recognized as a necessity even in industrialized countries. Single-use devices in...

Use of balloon-tipped catheters in the critically ill child.

A retrospective study of our experience in the placement of 19 consecutive balloon-tipped catheters in the pulmonary artery of 18 children disclosed that the procedure can be performed with relative ease in the intensive care unit without the aid of fluoroscopy. Insertion of the catheters was not associated with any serious complications. Catheter malfunction, however, occurred in 9 of 18 patie...

Management of obstructed balloon catheters.

Failure of a balloon catheter to deflate is not uncommon and prevents its removal. Methods of overcoming the problem include traction, bursting the balloon by overinflation, dissolving it with solvents, puncturing it percutaneously with a needle, or puncturing it with a wire stylet passed through the catheter. All except the last technique have major disadvantages and are of questionable safety...

Visibility of Balloon Dilatation Catheters

In this study, an easy to use measurement method was developed to quantify the balloon dilatation catheters visibility, thus making them comparable. The visibility of the distal and proximal markers and the balloon (average values of the markers) was determined for fourteen balloons of the same type and material, but different lengths and diameters. Repeatability of these values was tested by o...
