Basic Needs (in)Security and Subjective Equivalence Scales

چکیده
Abstract Equivalence scales are policy parameters for inequality measurement, tax deductions and subsidies. Thus, their accuracy is relevant both budgets social cohesion; however, measurement subject to debate regarding the underlying measure of welfare. Self-assessed insecurities in terms clothing, housing food—or basic needs—imply that at least some households lower levels welfare than those meeting needs. We use this determine increase total expenditure required meet needs, on average, thus we able calculate implied equivalence scales. compare these subjective ones arise from objective measures, such as shares same items. Our more consistent plausible across all goods, similar arising food shares. While either or clothing neither needs adequacy nor they plausible, given plausibility rules apply. Furthermore, smaller proposed OECD-modified scale.

The estimation of pensioner equivalence scales using subjective data
This paper uses panel data on pensioners’ subjective evaluations of their financial positions to construct equivalence scales for pensioners. A pensioner couple is estimated to require an income 44% higher than a comparable single pensioner to reach the same standard of living. This is significantly less than the equivalence scale value implied by the ratio of state pension rates, the McClement...
متن کاملEvaluating Regional Poverty in China With Subjective Equivalence Scales
This paper analyzes the poverty in urban China in 1995 using 1995 Chinese Household Income Projects (CHIP) data. It applies the intersection method to estimate the minimum poverty thresholds and the implicit equivalence scales that differentiate according to family sizes and regional characteristics. The Sen Index of Poverty and Headcount Index are estimated at four distinct poverty thresholds ...
متن کاملEquity-regarding poverty measures: Differences in needs and the role of equivalence scales
The paper investigates the definition of equity-regarding poverty measures when there are different household types in the population. It derives the implications of a between-type regressive transfer principle for poverty measures, for the choice of poverty lines and for the measurement of living standard. The role of equivalence scales which are popular in empirical work on poverty measuremen...
متن کاملBasic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Mediates the Association between Self-Control Skills and Subjective Well-Being
Although studies have shown that self-control skills (SCSs) are positively linked to both personal and interpersonal outcomes in adolescent students, studies on the putative mechanisms underlying this relationship are scarce. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory and previous studies, we theorized that the association between students' SCSs and their subjective well-being (SWB) in school may be ...
متن کاملEstimates of Semiparametric Equivalence Scales
Within the semiparametric framework introduced by Pendakur (1999) we introduce a new loss function to estimate equivalence scales. This loss function uses all available information from the total expenditures of both the reference and nonreference households and as such it produces more reliable estimates. We also use the correlation coefficient to directly test the hypothesis of shape invarian...
