Beaver-Driven Peatland Ecotone Dynamics: Impoundment Detection Using Lidar and Geomorphon Analysis

چکیده

This investigation focused on remotely detecting beaver impoundments and dams along the boreal-like peatland ecotones enmeshing Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, a National Natural Landmark in mountainous West Virginia, USA. Beaver (Castor spp.) are renowned for their role as ecosystem engineers. They can alter local hydrology, change ratios of meadow to woodland, act buffers against drought wildfire, influence important climate parameters such carbon retention methanogenesis. The (~1000 m a.s.l.) occupy ~300 ha, including ~40 ha regionally rare, open peatlands. Given likely historical activity formation maintenance conditions at Glades, monitoring recent may be useful predicting future changes. We analyzed sensed data identify reconstruct shifting patterns surface hydrology associated with ponds developed novel application geomorphons detect them, aided by exploitation absences errors Lidar data. also quantified decadal-timescale dynamics tallying detectable active between 1990–2020, revealing active/fallow cycles changing numbers per unit area suitable riparian habitat. research presents both practical approach through analysis publicly available spatiotemporal reconstruction three decades this rare imperiled “Arctic Island” southern High Alleghenies.

Terrain Obstacle Detection and Analysis using LIDAR

Introduction Autonomy is crucial in planetary robotics where extreme distance and limited resource availability make continuous teleoperation impractical. Environmental obstacles represent a fundamental hurdle, as natural hazards may prevent robots from accomplishing certain tasks by invalidating path plans. In the worst-case scenario, it may even result in physical harm to the robot. Valuable ...

GIS-Based Detection of Gullies in Terrestrial LiDAR Data of the Cerro Llamoca Peatland (Peru)

Cushion peatlands are typical features of the high altitude Andes in South America. Due to the adaptation to difficult environmental conditions, they are very fragile ecosystems and therefore vulnerable to environmental and climate changes. Peatland erosion has severe effects on their ecological functions, such as water storage capacity. Thus, erosion monitoring is highly advisable. Erosion qua...

Lidar detection using a dual-frequency source.

A new technique of dual-frequency Doppler-lidar measurement is investigated. This technique is based on the use of a coherently locked, tunable, dual-frequency laser source and is shown to accurately measure velocities as small as 26 mum/s. It is generated by exploiting the nonlinear dynamics of a semiconductor laser through a proper combination of optical injection and operating conditions.

Evolutionary-driven search for solar building models using LiDAR data

The search for solar buildings is one of the primary challenges in urban planning, especially when developing self-sustainable cities. This work uses an evolutionary approach for finding the optimal building model based on airborne Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) laser-scanned data, regarding solar potential. The method considers self-adaptive differential evolution for solving the constrai...
