Statistical Mechanics of Biological Networks
This paper outlines an approach to the topological analysis of large-scale biological networks. The approach uses concepts from statistical mechanics and information theory to develop automated analysis methods able to generate empirically testable hypotheses about the entities in the networks based on the topology of their connections.
متن کاملVon Neumann's growth model: statistical mechanics and biological applications
We review recent work on the statistical mechanics of Von Neumann’s growth model and discuss its application to cellular metabolic networks. In this context, we present a detailed analysis of the physiological scenario underlying optimality à la Von Neumann in the metabolism of the bacterium E. coli, showing that optimal solutions are characterized by a considerable microscopic flexibility acco...
متن کاملIntroduction: statistical mechanics of molecular and cellular biological systems.
This issue of Interface contains a set of papers linked to a remarkable programme of research collaboration held at the Isaac Newton Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, UK in the first 6 months of 2004. The Newton Institute opened its doors for ‘Statistical Mechanics of Biomolecular and Cellular Systems’ (or ‘SMC’) after 3 years of preparation by the organizers to make sure that...
متن کاملStatistical Inference and Statistical Mechanics
In this lecture, recent developments on connections between Markov processes and nonequilibrium statistical mechanical systems are discussed. A statistical mechanical analogy is developed for Markov processes and a local entropic measure of their true asymmetry is defined. Introducing partial observations, conditional and joint analogies are developed for Markov processes and their optimal filt...
