Biomass Polygeneration System for the Thermal Conversion of Softwood Waste into Hydrogen and Drop-In Biofuels

In order to keep the +1.5 °C over-temperature, previously predicted with high confidence by IPPC Sixth Assessment, as minimal feasible, it is more than vital achieve a low-emission energy system. Polygeneration systems based on thermochemical processes involve biomass conversion in multi-output of bioenergy carriers and chemicals. Due reduced input input/output diversification, polygeneration are considered interesting pathways that can increase competitiveness biomass-derived products. The proposed route fast pyrolysis, sorption-enhanced biochar gasification crude bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation produce drop-in biofuel hydrogen examined. Both kinetic equilibrium approaches were implemented Aspen Plus take into account effect major operating parameters process performance then validated against literature data. Results show how integration leads improved mass yield increases overall efficiency up 10%-points, reaching maximum value 75%. Among various investigated, pyrolysis temperature influences mainly products distribution while Steam/Biochar Sorbent/Biochar affect efficiency.
