Biotite as a recorder of an exsolved Li-rich volatile phase in upper-crustal silicic magma reservoirs

چکیده
Abstract The magmatic-hydrothermal transition is key in controlling the fate of many economically important elements due to change partitioning when melt and magmatic fluid coexist. Despite its increasing economic importance, behavior lithium (Li) such environments remains poorly known. We illustrate how compositionally unusual biotites from rhyolitic Bishop Tuff (California, USA) Kos Plateau (Greece) may contain a volatile phase trapped between layers biotite crystals. originating pristine deposits showing expected X-ray diffraction spectra, these return low (<95 wt%) analytical totals via electron microprobe (EMP) consistent with presence considerable amounts light (non-measurable by EMP). Lithium contents isotope ratios are remarkable, abundances reaching >2300 ppm, exceptionally Li isotopic compositions (?7Li as –27.6‰), large fractionation corresponding bulk samples (?7Libt–bulk –36.5‰). Other mineral phases, groundmass glass, inclusions same units do not support an extremely Li-rich prior eruption. Biotites phonolitic systems (Tenerife [Canary Islands] Campi Flegrei [Italy]) show extreme compositional differences, roughly equivalent contents, underscored significantly reduced ?7Libt–bulk maximum –10.9‰. ascribe difference near-liquidus appearance alkaline suites, before widespread exsolution magma reservoir, while crystallizes at temperature, trapping coexisting exsolved reservoir.

for a crustal magma reservoir beneath the upper east rift
An anomalous body with low Vp (compressional wave velocity), low Vs (shear wave velocity), and high Vp/Vs anomalies is observed at 8–11 km depth beneath the upper east rift zone of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii by simultaneous inversion of seismic velocity structure and earthquake locations. We interpret this body to be a crustal magma reservoir beneath the volcanic pile, similar to those widely re...
متن کاملCrystal sizes in evolving silicic magma chambers
Crystal size distributions (CSDs) of quartz and zircon phenocrysts in individual pumice clasts from several voluminous ash-flow tuffs provide a quenched snapshot view of conditions in preclimactic magma chambers. A common feature of these CSDs is a concavedown, lognormal shape, in contrast to the reported linear CSDs in more mafic systems. This feature is interpreted to be a general result of s...
متن کاملThe Magma Reservoirs
The rocky innards of the Earth locally melt to produce magma, which sometimes erupts as cataclysmic explosions. The energy released by these eruptions is matched only by that of large meteorite impacts. Whether large pools of magma generate huge volcanic eruptions, whose volume and duration can have global consequences for humanity, or solidify slowly within the Earth’s crust to form plutons (b...
متن کاملDynamics of differentiation in magma reservoirs
In large magma chambers, gradients of temperature and composition develop due to cooling and to fractional crystallization. Unstable density differences lead to differential motions between melt and crystals, and a major goal is to explain how this might result in chemical differentiation of magma. Arriving at a full description of the physics of Crystallizing magma chambers is a challenge beca...
