Boulder-strewn flats in a high-latitude macrotidal embayment, Baffin Island: geomorphology, formation, and future stability

چکیده

Tidal flats are widely distributed on high-latitude coasts, where sea ice processes have been invoked to explain the abundance and distribution of boulders. This study documents surface morphology sediment dynamics a Low-Arctic macrotidal system, boulder-rich tidal Koojesse Inlet, fronting Nunavut capital, Iqaluit, Baffin Island. is region postglacial isostatic uplift forced regression, with raised littoral, deltaic, glaciomarine deposits. The spring-tidal range 11.1 m cover lasts roughly 9 months year. extensive intertidal up 1 km wide, veneer sand gravel (including large boulders) resting an erosional unconformity truncating underlying mud, forming terrace within present range. Over 3-year study, no consistent pattern erosion or deposition was evident. longer time scale, concave hypsometry, low supply, slight ebb dominance weak currents, abrasion by wave-entrained sand, ebb-oriented ripples formed under subaerial drainage, slumps flanks seaward hydraulic gravitational transport. These may be greater importance than shoreward underlines relict deposits, uplift, falling relative level in development these flats. Relative sea-level projections for Iqaluit ambiguous, but switch rising level, if it occurs, combined more open water wave energy, could alter foreshore system.

Phoenix Landing Site Geomorphology: Surface Stability and Implcations for the Mar- Tian Latitude-dependent Mantle

Introduction. The NASA Phoenix lander has provided a unique first-look at permafrost processes operating on the surface of the martian northern plains [1]. Critical results from the mission include the detection of an icy surface present beneath thin, overlying, dry sediments [1-3]; complex soil chemistry comparable to that observed in terrestrial cold and arid terrains [4, 5]; and weather/clim...

Arctic marine phytobenthos of northern Baffin Island

Global climate change is expected to alter the polar bioregions faster than any other marine environment. This study assesses the biodiversity of seaweeds and associated eukaryotic pathogens of an established study site in northern Baffin Island (72° N), providing a baseline inventory for future work assessing impacts of the currently ongoing changes in the Arctic marine environment. A total of...

Holocene glaciation and climate evolution of Baffin Island, Arctic Canada

Lake sediment cores and cosmogenic exposure (CE) dates constrain the pattern of deglaciation and evolution of climate across Baffin Island since the last glacial maximum (LGM). CE dating of erratics demonstrates that the northeastern coastal lowlands became ice-free ca.14 ka as the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) receded from its LGM margin on the continental shelf. Coastal lakes in southeastern Baf...

Lower respiratory tract infections in Inuit infants on Baffin Island.

BACKGROUND It has long been suspected that Canadian Inuit children suffer from frequent severe lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs), but the causes and risk factors have not been documented. This study assessed the infectious causes and other epidemiologic factors that may contribute to the severity of LRTI in young Inuit children on Baffin Island. METHODS A prospective case study was c...

Dental caries prevalence in the Baffin Island Eskimo.

A survey of 766 Eskimo children in Baffin Zone of the Northwest Territories showed high levels of dental caries comparable to those found elsewhere in the Arctic. Lowest caries rates were in Pond Inlet, one of the most isolated settlements. The fluoridation of water supplies in Frobisher Bay appeared to be effecting a reduction in dental caries in the permanent teeth but not in the deciduous te...
