Brief olfactory learning drives perceptive sensitivity in newborn rabbits: New insights in peripheral processing of odor mixtures and induction

چکیده
Perception of the wide, complex and moving odor world requires that olfactory system engages processing mechanisms ensuring detection, discrimination environment adaptation, as early peripheral stages. Odor items are mainly elicited by odorant mixtures which give rise to either elemental or configural perceptions. Here, we first explored contribution perception through interactions at receptor (OR) level. This was done in newborn rabbits, offer opportunity pair electrophysiology well characterized behavioral responses two binary mixtures, AB A'B’, differ their component ratio (A: ethyl isobutyrate, B: maltol), rabbit pups respectively perceived configurally elementally. Second, studied influence on reactivity brief but powerful learning one mixture (odorant B), conditioned association with mammary pheromone (MP), allowed us assess possible implication phenomenon called induction neonatal learning. Induction is a plasticity mechanism expected alter both electrophysiological to, perceptual detection threshold of, stimulus. The results reveal modes partly rooted differential processes, mirroring antagonist OR level lesser extent than A'B’ elementally mixture. Further, highlight single MP-induced episode sufficient stimulus including it, shifts towards lower concentrations. Thus, relies rabbits.

Processing of odor mixtures in the zebrafish olfactory bulb.
Components of odor mixtures often are not perceived individually, suggesting that neural representations of mixtures are not simple combinations of the representations of the components. We studied odor responses to binary mixtures of amino acids and food extracts at different processing stages in the olfactory bulb (OB) of zebrafish. Odor-evoked input to the OB was measured by imaging Ca2+ sig...
متن کاملOlfactory processing and odor specificity: a meta-analysis of menstrual cycle variation in olfactory sensitivity
AbstrAct: Cycle-correlated variation in olfactory threshold, with women becoming more sensitive to odors mid-cycle, is somewhat supported by the literature but the evidence is not entirely consistent, with several studies finding no, or mixed, effects. It has been argued that cyclic shifts in olfactory threshold might be limited to odors relevant to the mating context. We aimed to test whether ...

The olfactory system is one of our fundamental senses, responsible for the detection of airborne chemicals from our surroundings. These chemicals include small volatile molecules, proteins, peptides to gaseous substances, such as carbon dioxide, and provide valuable information regarding the location of food, mates and potential danger. The ability of the olfactory system to detect and orchestr...
