Brief Research Report: Psychometric Properties of a Cognitive Load Measure When Assessing the Load Associated With a Course

The cognitive load imposed by instruction is an important consideration for instructional designers. Theoretical models have traditionally divided total into intrinsic, extrinsic, and germane load. 10-item Cognitive Load Inventory (CLI-10) designed to measure these three types of It typically administered immediately following a discrete learning activity (e.g., lecture). This study assesses the properties CLI-10 when used “long-term” experienced in course, over semester. To do this, instrument was given group students enrolled veterinary anatomy course (N = 94), toward end 13-week Students were asked indicate they across this course. Confirmatory factor analysis supported instrument’s three-factor structure way. Further, subscales performed well terms internal reliability convergent discriminant validity.
