Abstract The buffer layer defects of high‐voltage crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) cable occur frequently, which makes the detection method become focus to be studied. Here, broadband impedance technology for XLPE cables with corrugated aluminium sheath is investigated. There are nine samples, including new and defective ones. Some artificial, other retired cables. influence wiring mode, circumferential relative position electrodes, length, artificial white powder, damp, on spectrum It found that mode insulation shield/aluminium at end can effectively detect defects. And amplitude in cable, measuring various positions, obviously different. When there powders, air gaps, or ablation layer, (BIS) will increase by several times. damped, BIS reduce. research here provides theoretical support technical methods sheath.
