Can Neutron Star Mergers Alone Explain the r-process Enrichment of the Milky Way?

چکیده
Abstract Comparing Galactic chemical evolution models to the observed elemental abundances in Milky Way, we show that neutron star mergers can be a leading r-process site only if at low metallicities such have very short delay times and significant ejecta masses are facilitated by of compact objects. Namely, black hole–neutron mergers, depending on hole spins, play an important role early enrichment Way. We also none binary population synthesis used this Letter, i.e., COMPAS, StarTrack, Brussels, ComBinE, BPASS, currently reproduce abundance observations. The predictions problematic not for but Type Ia supernovae, which may point shortcomings models.

Galactic r-process enrichment by neutron star mergers in cosmological simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy
We quantify the stellar abundances of neutron-rich r-process nuclei in cosmological zoom-in simulations of aMilkyWay-mass galaxy from the Feedback In Realistic Environments project. The galaxy is enriched with r-process elements by binary neutron star (NS) mergers and with iron and other metals by supernovae. These calculations include key hydrodynamic mixing processes not present in standard s...
متن کاملr-Process Nucleosynthesis in Black Hole - Neutron Star Mergers
Compact object mergers have long been speculated to be a possible site of r-process nucleosynthesis. While most attention has been focused on the cold decompression of neutron star matter ejected from the merger, other sites within the merger likely contribute to its nucleosynthetic output. Here we consider hot outflows from the accretion disk that forms around the black hole following a black ...
متن کاملChemical enrichment and star formation in the Milky Way disk
A chromospheric age distribution of 552 latetype dwarfs is transformed into a star formation history by the application of scale height corrections, stellar evolutionary corrections and volume corrections. We show that the disk of our Galaxy has experienced enhanced episodes of star formation at 0-1 Gyr, 2-5 Gyr and 7-9 Gyr ago, although the reality of the latter burst is still uncertain. The s...
متن کاملSignatures of hypermassive neutron star lifetimes on r-process nucleosynthesis in the disc ejecta from neutron star mergers
We investigate the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in the winds ejected by accretion discs formed in neutron star mergers. We compute the element formation in disc outflows from hypermassive neutron star (HMNS) remnants of variable lifetime, including the effect of angular momentum transport in the disc evolution. We employ long-term axisymmetric hydrodynamic disc simulations to model the eje...
