Capillary driven fragmentation of large gas bubbles in turbulence
نویسندگان
چکیده
Bubble fragmentation drives up to 40% of the CO2 transfer from atmosphere ocean. However, small size bubble distribution, mainly responsible for gas dissolution, is still poorly understood. Combining experimental and numerical calculations, we find that capillary effects set production rate which physically explains origin their distribution.

Numerical simulations of compressively driven interstellar turbulence: I. Isothermal gas
Context. Supersonic turbulence is ubiquitous in the interstellar medium and plays an important role in contemporary star formation. Aims. To perform a high-resolution numerical simulation of supersonic isothermal turbulence driven by compressive large-scale forcing and to analyse various statistical properties. Methods. The compressible Euler equations with an external stochastic force field do...
متن کاملTurbulence of capillary waves.
A numerical model for direct simulation of the surface of ideal fluid based on the expansion of the Hamiltonian of the surface up to terms of fourth order is developed. For the case of capillary wave we observe the formation of powerlike spectrum of spatial elevations close to one predicted by weakturbulent theory Ik . k219y4, which previously was not confirmed either experimentally or numerica...
متن کاملOverall gas-liquid mass transfer from Taylor bubbles flowing upwards in a circular capillary
Overall liquid side volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLa was determined experimentally for cocurrent Taylor flow moving upwards in a glass tube of an internal diameter of 3mm. Experiments were performed for physical absorption of oxygen in 20% aqueous solution of ethanol. Shadowgraph technique was deployed for precise measurements of bubble lengths and velocities. Experimental values of vol...
متن کاملThe Effect of Bubbles on Developed Turbulence
We report on measurements of energy spectra, second and higher order structure functions in bubbly turbulence. The void fraction is up to 2.9 % with an mean equivalent bubble size of 3-5 mm. We find the results of [I. Mazzitelli, D. Lohse, F. Toschi, Phys. Fluids, 15 L5 (2003)] qualitatively confirmed, i.e. a more pronounced energy enhancement on small scales than on large scales due to the pre...
متن کاملDecay of capillary wave turbulence.
We report on the observation of freely decaying capillary wave turbulence on the surface of a fluid. The capillary wave turbulence spectrum decay is found to be self-similar in time with the same power law exponent as the one found in the stationary regime, in agreement with weak turbulence predictions. The amplitude of all Fourier modes are found to decrease exponentially with time at the same...
