Carbon Dioxide Leakages through Fault Zones: Potential Implications for the Long-term Integrity of Geological Storage Sites

چکیده
Carbon sequestration has recently become more widely recognized as a potential means of reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Understanding the tectonic relationship discharges and sealing behavior faults is conducive for predicting long-term integrity geological storage formations. Of primary concern influence crustal deformation on leakage through fault zones during large-scale underground injection. This paper examines record from faulted, natural carbon-dioxide-rich formation, investigates tilt in zones. Temporal changes reveal pulses concentrations ranging 537.7 up to 1317.1 ppm, mean level represents 890.2 ppm. particular interest that each high-frequency pulse coincides with onset local solid-earth tide. We show significant correlation between magnitude amount leakage. suggest levels increase owing fracture opening, potentially caused by architecture permeability structure regions surrounding faults.

Carbon dioxide capture and geological storage.
Carbon dioxide capture and geological storage is a technology that could be used to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere from large industrial installations such as fossil fuel-fired power stations by 80-90%. It involves the capture of carbon dioxide at a large industrial plant, its transport to a geological storage site and its long-term isolation in a geological storage reservoir...
متن کاملBuilding Confidence in Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide
In recent years, carbon dioxide capture and its geological storage (CCS) has been recognized as one of the most effective tools to mitigate climate change with its vast potential and cost effectiveness. With this background, many countries around the world have started to study on its technical aspects as well as economic aspects. In some countries, several commercial or experimental plants are...
متن کاملTiered Fault Tolerance for Long-Term Integrity
Fault-tolerant services typically make assumptions about the type and maximum number of faults that they can tolerate while providing their correctness guarantees; when such a fault threshold is violated, correctness is lost. We revisit the notion of fault thresholds in the context of long-term archival storage. We observe that fault thresholds are inevitably violated in longterm services, maki...

Convective stability analysis of the long-term storage of carbon dioxide in deep saline aquifers
Deep saline aquifers are one of the most suitable geologic formations for carbon sequestration. The linear and global stability analysis of the time-dependent density-driven convection in deep saline aquifers is presented for long-term storage of carbon dioxide (CO2). The convective mixing that can greatly accelerate the CO2 dissolution into saline aquifers arises because the density of brine i...
