Carbon sources of benthic fauna in temperate lakes across multiple trophic states

چکیده

Abstract. Previous studies have shown that microbially produced methane can be a dominant carbon source of lacustrine sedimentary macrofauna in eutrophic lakes, most likely through grazing on methane-oxidizing bacteria. Here we investigate the contributions different sources to macrofaunal biomass across five lakes central Switzerland range from oligotrophic highly eutrophic. Macrofaunal communities change with trophic state, chironomid larvae dominating and tubificid oligochaetes lake sediments. The 13C-isotopic data suggest average contribution methane-derived both groups is similar but consistently remains minor, ranging only ?1 % at 12 lakes. remaining explained by assimilation detritus-derived organic carbon. Low abundances methane-cycling microorganisms specimens, burrows, surrounding sediment based 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences copy numbers genes involved anaerobic aerobic cycling (mcrA, pmoA) support interpretation isotopic data. Notably, rRNA macrofauna, including guts, are divergent those tubes or Many specimens dominated single phylotype Fusobacteria, ?-, ?-, ?-, ?-Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Parcubacteria. This raises question whether live so far uncharacterized relationships detrital organic-matter-degrading bacterial endosymbionts.

Benthic Fauna of Shadegan Wetland

Biological response and ecological indices of benthic communities, such as greater mortality of foraminifera and shell abnormalities, have been used to document pollution effects on ecosystems. Shadegan Wetland was damaged from a deposition of huge amounts of soot and products of burning oilwells of Kuwait as well as chronic exhaust fumes of refinery and industrial furnaces. In this investigati...

Dissolved organic carbon concentration controls benthic primary production: Results from in situ chambers in north-temperate lakes

We evaluated several potential drivers of primary production by benthic algae (periphyton) in north-temperate lakes. We used continuous dissolved oxygen measurements from in situ benthic chambers to quantify primary production by periphyton at multiple depths across 11 lakes encompassing a broad range of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total phosphorous (TP) concentrations. Light-use efficie...

Concordance of taxonomic richness patterns across multiple assemblages in lakes of the northeastern United States

We investigated the concordance of taxonomic richness patterns and their environmental correlates for assemblages of benthic macroinvertebrates, riparian birds, sedimentary diatoms, fish, planktonic crustaceans, and planktonic rotifers in 186 northeastern U.S. lakes. Taxon counts were standardized with respect to sampling effort using rarefaction. The degree of concordance among assemblage rich...
