Cascade adaptive optics: contrast performance analysis of a two-stage controller by numerical simulations

چکیده

The contrast performance of current extreme adaptive optics (XAO) systems can be improved by adding a second AO correction stage featuring its own wavefront sensor (WFS), deformable mirror (DM), and real-time controller. We develop dynamical model for such cascade (CAO) system with two stages each controlled standard integrator study control properties. how configuration improve an existing without modifying the first stage. analyze CAO architecture in general show part disturbance is transferred from low to high temporal frequencies nefarious effect overshoot suggest possible ways mitigate this. also carry out numerical simulations particular case using Shack–Hartmann WFS smaller DM running at higher framerate reduce error. In this case, we demonstrate that improves imaging one order magnitude shortens decorrelation time atmospheric turbulence speckles even greater factor. results presents promising relatively simple way upgrade some XAO achieve contrasts fostering large number science including direct exoplanets.

Layer Oriented Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics systems: Performance analysis by numerical simulations

The multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) technique allows to correcting the vertical distribution of atmospheric turbulence, extending the isoplanatic angle and the sky coverage. In the Layer-Oriented (LO) approach, each wavefront sensor (WFS) is conjugated to a given atmospheric layer and is linked in closed loop to a deformable mirror, conjugated to the same height. This technique benefits ...

Numerical investigation of clocking in a two-stage gas turbine

Flow in the first two-stage of V 94.2 gas turbine is simulated numerically. In this turbine, the second stator is clocked relative to the first stator to different positions. Steady-state analysis was carried out by varying the circumferential relative position of the consecutive stator vanes to study the effects of the clocking on turbine performance. A density based compressible inviscid ...

Advancing High - Contrast Adaptive Optics

A long-standing challenge has been to directly image faint extrasolar planets adjacent to their host suns, which may be 10 – 10 times brighter than the planet. Several extreme AO systems designed for high-contrast observations have been tested at this point, including SPHERE, Magellan AO, PALM-3000, Project 1640, NICI, and the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). The GPI is the world’s most advanced hig...

Durham adaptive optics real-time controller.

The Durham adaptive optics (AO) real-time controller was initially a proof of concept design for a generic AO control system. It has since been developed into a modern and powerful central-processing-unit-based real-time control system, capable of using hardware acceleration (including field programmable gate arrays and graphical processing units), based primarily around commercial off-the-shel...
