چکیده

Abstract This study aims to determine whether the application of cattle manure and associated bioturbation by dung beetles other invertebrates can increase oak seedling establishment in high biodiversity Mediterranean silvopastoral systems known as “dehesas”, which are comprised scattered oaks a grassland layer used for livestock rearing. A two-year was conducted representative dehesa southern Spain. Firstly, effect pads on acorn consumption wild predators monitored, along with beetle abundance plot bioturbation. Secondly, indirect effects burial, predation rodents were assessed under condition exclusion. The results consistently demonstrate positive presence persistence acorns, well establishment, result reduced improved microhabitat conditions acorns seedlings. These processes mediated Tunneler beetles, move great amount soil material, dominant our records, suggest their importance passive without disregarding influence edaphic present. We conclude that significantly improves dehesas through burial bioturbation, acts protect them from rodents, desiccation damage. Passive thus emerges an important ecosystem service has been little-studied date. Appropriate rotational management could therefore contribute addressing bottleneck regeneration dehesas.

Dung Beetles and Microbial Decomposition of Dung

Dung beetles belong to the superfamily Scarabaeoidea, and are mostly within the subfamilies of Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae. They are given their name because they feed partially or exclusively on feces. Each species of dung beetles can be classified as one of several types: rollers, tunnelers and dwellers. Rollers roll the dung into round balls, which are then used for brooding chambers or as a...

Treating cattle with antibiotics affects greenhouse gas emissions, and microbiota in dung and dung beetles.

Antibiotics are routinely used to improve livestock health and growth. However, this practice may have unintended environmental impacts mediated by interactions among the wide range of micro- and macroorganisms found in agroecosystems. For example, antibiotics may alter microbial emissions of greenhouse gases by affecting livestock gut microbiota. Furthermore, antibiotics may affect the microbi...

The Comparative Effectiveness of Rodents and Dung Beetles as Local Seed Dispersers in Mediterranean Oak Forests

The process of seed dispersal of many animal-dispersed plants is frequently mediated by a small set of biotic agents. However, the contribution that each of these dispersers makes to the overall recruitment may differ largely, with important ecological and management implications for the population viability and dynamics of the species implied in these interactions. In this paper, we compared t...

New screening test to predict the potential impact of ivermectin-contaminated cattle dung on dung beetles.

According to European Union recommendations, a test method has been developed to evaluate the effects of veterinary pharmaceuticals on dung feeding insects. This test method was evaluated with the dung beetle Aphodius constans by using fecal residues of ivermectin after a pour-on administration. Dung of different age (and thus containing different concentrations of ivermectin) as well as mixtur...

Effect of dung burial by the dung beetle Bubas bison on numbers and viability of Cryptosporidium oocysts in cattle dung.

Cryptosporidium oocysts were inoculated into fresh dung (∼1.2×10(4) oocysts per gram wet weight) and fed to dung beetles to assess the effect of dung burial by the dung beetle Bubas bison on the distribution of the oocysts in small cores of soil in the laboratory. The experiment consisted of five replicates of each of two treatments; controls (dung but no dung beetles) and the experimental trea...
