UV light inactivation of bacterial biothreat agents.

Seven species of bacterial biothreat agents were tested for susceptibility to UV light (254 nm). All gram-negative organisms tested required <12 mJ/cm(2) for a 4-log(10) reduction in viability (inactivation). Tailing off of the B. anthracis spore inactivation curves began close to the 2-log(10) inactivation point, with a fluence of approximately 40 mJ/cm(2), and 3-log(10) inactivation still was...

Monochloramine inactivation of bacterial select agents.

Seven species of bacterial select agents were tested for susceptibility to monochloramine. Under test conditions, the monochloramine routinely maintained in potable water would reduce six of the species by 2 orders of magnitude within 4.2 h. Bacillus anthracis spores would require up to 3.5 days for the same inactivation with monochloramine.

Prevention and treatment of bacterial diseases caused by bacterial bioterrorism threat agents.

There is general consensus that the bacterial agents or products most likely to be used as weapons of mass destruction are Bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis and the neurotoxin of Clostridium botulinum. Modern supportive and antimicrobial therapy for inhalational anthrax is associated with a 45% mortality rate, reinforcing the need for better adjunctive therapy and prev...

Pathogenic rickettsiae as bioterrorism agents.

The diseases caused by rickettsiae vary from mild to severe clinical presentations, with case fatality ranging from none to over 30%. The severity of rickettsial diseases has been associated with age, delayed diagnosis, hepatic and renal dysfunction, central nervous system abnormalities, and pulmonary compromise. Despite the variability in clinical presentations many pathogenic rickettsiae caus...
