چکیده
Abstract We examined the climatological features of strong winds associated with extratropical cyclones around Japan during 40 seasons between November and April from 1979/80 to 2018/19 using reanalysis data. Our assessments revealed that caused most (80%–90%). Notably, contribution explosively developing is larger (70%–80%). The Extratropical Transition of Tropical Cyclones
The objective is to investigate the physical processes that occur as a tropical cyclone interacts with the environment such that intensity and structure changes occur. Specific interactions being studied are with baroclinic environments in the midlatitudes during extratropical transition. During extratropical transition, radical changes to the storm structure occur as vertical wind shear and in...
متن کاملThe Dynamics of Extratropical Oceanic Cyclones
A temperature structure appropriate for maritime areas is employed to find exact solutions to the non-linear quasi-geostrophic omega and vorticity equations, using a procedure similar to that used in a quasigeostrophic model by Sanders (1971). Results are qualitatively similar to those found in the latter model, and thus, are consistent with the traditional baroclinic stability theory. The prin...

[1] Using cloud observations from NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer, and CloudSat-CALIPSO, composites of cloud fraction in southern and northern hemisphere extratropical cyclones are obtained for cold and warm seasons between 2006 and 2010, to assess differences between these three data sets, and between summer and winter cyclones. In both ...
متن کاملCan Climate Models Capture the Structure of Extratropical Cyclones?
Composites of wind speeds, equivalent potential temperature, mean sea level pressure, vertical velocity, and relative humidity have been produced for the 100 most intense extratropical cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere winter for the 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) and the high resolution global environment model (HiGEM). Features of conceptual models of cyclone structure—the warm conveyor b...
متن کاملProbabilistic Clustering of Extratropical Cyclones Using Regression Mixture Models
A probabilistic clustering technique is developed for classification of wintertime extratropical cyclone (ETC) tracks over the North Atlantic. We use a regression mixture model to describe the longitude-time and latitude–time propagation of the ETCs. A simple tracking algorithm is applied to 6-hourly mean sea-level pressure fields to obtain the tracks from either a general circulation model (GC...
