Coastal Dynamics Analysis Based on Orbital Remote Sensing Big Data and Multivariate Statistical Models

As the interface between land and water, coastlines are highly dynamic intricately tied to sediment budget. These regions have a high functional diversity require enlightened management preserve their value for future. In this study we assess changes São Paulo State (SE Brazil) coastline over last 36 years. The innovatively employs big data remote sensing techniques multivariate statistical models evaluate generate erosion/accretion rates (1985–2021) relative beach orientation slope. Shoreline change been obtained sandy beaches at 485 one-kilometer-spaced transects. Our findings capture complexity heterogeneity of analyzed coastline, regional local scale. No association was found shoreline face orientation. Nonetheless, dependency relationship dissipative with moderate accretion. Beaches facing south, stability, were prone accumulation. Locations slow accretion, like spits tombolo-protected beaches, associated southeast-oriented more erosion due storm waves from south. Results provide broad, fast, relatively low-cost methodology that can be used in any context, bringing essential information coastal decision-making related use occupation zones.
