Coastal Ecosystem Vulnerability and Sea Level Rise (SLR) in South Florida: A Mangrove Transition Projection

چکیده
We used static, elevation and land cover data to estimate sea level rise impacts (SLR) urban, developed lands coastal wetland systems in Everglades National Park the East West regions South Florida. Maps tables estimating potential state change open water were compiled through overlay analysis of elevation, cover, SLR masks with future projected using a transition threshold model. Analysis was based on 2–5-km-wide longitudinal band along SW SE coasts Florida where sea-level has no surface impediments inundation will likely cause coastline transgression migration. three different projections; 0.27 m (0.9 ft), 0.76 (2.5 ft) 1.13 (3.7 greater than current by 2070 estimated NOAA IPCC. Under projection 51% may be impacted. SLR, areas impacted 56.5 59.1%, respectively. Migration wetlands from their location into more inland response increased depths as function empirically derived marsh mangrove accretion rates also evaluated. With 2070, without accretion, 1,160 sq km became estuarine water. However, values 0.211 (4.1 mm yr –1 ) 0.55 (11 there only 349 41 km, low scenario mangroves able migrate while maintaining coastline. Sea level rise and South Florida coastal forests
Coastal ecosystems lie at the forefront of sea level rise. We posit that before the onset of actual inundation, sea level rise will influence the species composition of coastal hardwood hammocks and buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus L.) forests of the Everglades National Park based on tolerance to drought and salinity. Precipitation is the major water source in coastal hammocks and is stored in th...
متن کاملModelling Coastal Vulnerability and Adaptation to Sea Level Rise
Coastal regions are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR) therefore developing and implementing effective adaptation alternatives is crucial for their future development. However, there is uncertainty in the timing, duration, spatial location and extent of SLR and storms. The complexity that arises from climate, coastal systems and their interactions in space and time can easily become over...
متن کاملFramework for Analysing Coastal Vulnerability Due to Sea Level Rise and Coastal Floods using R
Sea level rise is a natural global phenomenon which is aggravated by anthropological activities. Severity of the rise varying in different parts of the world but the stress in general is increasingly threatening human development. Sustenance of a few species and their ecosystem depends on the rate and extent of rise. Coastal floods are inundations in coastal areas due to rise in sea water level...
متن کاملU.S. Pacific coastal wetland resilience and vulnerability to sea-level rise
We used a first-of-its-kind comprehensive scenario approach to evaluate both the vertical and horizontal response of tidal wetlands to projected changes in the rate of sea-level rise (SLR) across 14 estuaries along the Pacific coast of the continental United States. Throughout the U.S. Pacific region, we found that tidal wetlands are highly vulnerable to end-of-century submergence, with resulti...
متن کاملPotential increase in coastal wetland vulnerability to sea-level rise suggested by considering hydrodynamic attenuation effects
The future of coastal wetlands and their ecological value depend on their capacity to adapt to the interacting effects of human impacts and sea-level rise. Even though extensive wetland loss due to submergence is a possible scenario, its magnitude is highly uncertain due to limited understanding of hydrodynamic and bio-geomorphic interactions over time. In particular, the effect of man-made dra...
