Color-Perception-Guided Display Power Reduction for Virtual Reality

چکیده
Battery life is an increasingly urgent challenge for today's untethered VR and AR devices. However, the power efficiency of head-mounted displays naturally at odds with growing computational requirements driven by better resolution, refresh rate, dynamic ranges, all which reduce sustained usage time AR/VR For instance, Oculus Quest 2, under a fully-charged battery, can sustain only 2 to 3 hours operation time. Prior display reduction techniques mostly target smartphone displays. Directly applying techniques, however, degrades visual perception in noticeable artifacts. "power-saving mode" on smartphones uniformly lowers pixel luminance across and, as result, presents overall darkened users if directly applied content. Our key insight that must be cognizant gaze-contingent nature high field-of-view To end, we present system that, without degrading luminance, minimizes consumption while preserving fidelity when actively view immersive video sequences. This enabled constructing 1) color discrimination model through psychophysical studies, 2) (with respect color) real-device measurements. Critically, due careful design decisions made two models, our algorithm cast constrained optimization problem closed-form solution, implemented real-time, image-space shader. We evaluate using series studies large-scale analyses natural images. Experiment results show reduces much 24% (14% average) little no perceptual degradation.

The Visual Display Transformation for Virtual Reality
The visual display transformation for virtual reality (VR) systems is typically much more complex than the standard viewing transformation discussed in the literature for conventional computer graphics. The process can be represented as a series of transformations, some of which contain parameters that must match the physical configuration of the system hardware and the user’s body. Because of ...

Three alternatives to the traditional head mounted Virtual Reality display are described. One configuration is the Virtual Holographic Workstation; an external stereo CRT viewed by a user wearing head tracking stereo shutter glasses. Another is a Computer Augmented Reality camcorder, where virtual objects are composited onto live video using six axis tracking information about the location of t...

John Dilworth [Philosophical Psychology 23(2010), pp. 23-42] Realistic uses of Virtual Reality (VR) technology closely integrate user training on virtual objects with VR-assisted user interactions with real objects. This paper shows how the Interactive Theory of Perception (ITP) may be extended to cover such cases. Virtual objects are explained as concrete models (CMs) that have an inner genera...
