Combined plasma–coil optimization algorithms

Combined plasma–coil optimization approaches for designing stellarators are discussed and a new method calculating free-boundary equilibria multiregion relaxed magnetohydrodynmics (MRxMHD) is proposed. Four distinct categories of stellarator optimization, two which novel approaches, the fixed-boundary generalized quasi-free-boundary (coil) optimization. These described using MRxMHD energy functional, Biot–Savart integral, coil-penalty functional virtual casing integral their derivatives. The proposed equilibrium calculation differs from existing methods in how boundary-value problem posed, approach it seems that there not an associated minimization principle because non-symmetric arises. We propose to solve weak formulation this spectral-Galerkin method, will reduce something comparable calculation. In our discussion combined algorithms, we emphasize importance stability matrix.
