Combining Earthquake Ground Motion and Ambient Vibration Recordings to Evaluate a Local High-Resolution Amplification Model—Insight From the Lucerne Area, Switzerland

چکیده

Amplification factors are often estimated using empirical methods based on earthquake ground motion; however, especially in low-seismicity urban areas, recording a statistically representative number of high-quality signals may take years. Hence, the attempts to use ambient vibration instead have progressed. This includes development hybrid site-to-reference spectral ratio (SSRh) method that combines and recordings. We applied Lucerne area central Switzerland is characterized by low-to-moderate seismicity but was struck several strong earthquakes historical times (i.e., Mw 5.9 1,601) located glacial basin filled with unconsolidated deposits prone significant amplification. To develop high-resolution local site amplification model for city SSRh method, we took advantage small seismic monitoring network installed total about year stations Swiss Strong Motion Network (SSMNet). In addition, performed two extensive surveys record vibrations used dozens measurements since 2001. The resulting referring reference bedrock conditions indicates high-amplification (up 10-fold) broad range frequencies. consistent geological data response proxies such as f 0 values. direct comparison our results SSR functions sites shows good agreement. However, high uncertainty influenced daily variation noise wavefield, well spatial distribution network. also discussed extent applicability concluding main factor influencing its performance not distance similarity condition between stations.

Earthquake ground motion prediction using the ambient seismic field

[1] The waves generated by faulting represent the primary threat posed by most large earthquakes. The effect of complex geological structures, such as sedimentary basins, on earthquake ground motion is a source of particular concern. We show that it is possible to extract reliable phase and amplitude response that includes the effects of complex structure for the elastodynamic Green’s function ...

Long-period Ground Motion from a Great Earthquake

Direct body waves and fundamental surface waves are calculated for a credible, hypothetical great earthquake on the San Andreas Fault. The prototype event assumed is the Fort Tejon earthquake of January 9, 1857. Amplitudes and durations of long-period ground motion ( T > 1 sec) are found for a receiver in downtown Los Angeles. Calculations are carried out for various epicenters, dislocation pro...

Ground motion prediction of realistic earthquake sources using the ambient seismic field

[1] Predicting accurate ground motion is critical for earthquake hazard analysis, particularly in situations where sedimentary basins trap and amplify seismic waves. We exploit the information carried by the ambient seismic field to extract surface-wave Green’s functions between seismic stations and to predict long-period ground motion from earthquakes. To do so, we modify the surface impulse r...
