Comparative performance of barley and wheat across a wide range of yielding conditions. Does barley outyield wheat consistently in low-yielding conditions?

چکیده
There is a generalised belief that barley more resilient to stress than wheat. Consequently, land allocation wheat and based on presumed differential sensitivity stresses between these species. Previous field experiments showed yield of both crops tended be similar under low- high-productivity conditions Mediterranean environments, but in some particular studies advantages are reported. Therefore, the aim this study was determine comparative performance across wide range through literature published over first 20 years century considering exclusively where cereals had been grown side-by-side experiments. We compiled rigorous database from papers high-standard journals reporting actual data (we excluded simulated yields) measured were same experiment (excluding analysing separately). Yield distribution for species symmetrical with an average c. 440 g m?2 50–900 m?2. The yields lowest quartile ranged 58 293 m?2, being comparison suitable detecting differences low-yielding conditions. Considering individual papers, it possible identify any outcome cereals. However, all together clear there not consistent advantage at most stressful Indeed, very low yielding outyield barley. trends described above influenced by data-points comparisons tetraploid wheats, nor our own experimental data-points. Thus, we confirm review does consistently conditions, despite does.

Wheat and Barley
Moisture adsorption rates for stored grains are important for accurate modeling of drying and storage. Wheat and barley samples at initial moisture contents typical of grain storage were exposed to several levels of higher humidity at two temperatures to measure adsorption rates. The best fit to the data was achieved with the Page equation and the cellular diffusion equations. The adsorption ra...

"> The present study described the diversity of wheat and barley varieties andlandraces available in farmer’s fields in Syria using different indicators. Analysisof spatial and temporal diversity and coefficient of parentage along withmeasurements of agronomic and morphological traits were employed to explain thediversity of wheat and barley varieties or landraces grown by farmers in Syria.Farm...
متن کاملGenome-Wide Comparative Analysis of Flowering-Related Genes in Arabidopsis, Wheat, and Barley
Early flowering is an important trait influencing grain yield and quality in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in short-season cropping regions. However, due to large and complex genomes of these species, direct identification of flowering genes and their molecular characterization remain challenging. Here, we used a bioinformatic approach to predict flowering-related...

When young plants o f barley and wheat grown in hydroponic culture were subjected to salt stress, their freezing tolerance increased with increasing severity o f salt stress. Detached leaves from salt-stressed plants also exhibited an increased ability to supercool. Avoidance o f ice for mation permitted leaf survival at subzero temperatures which were no longer tolerated when ice nucleation r...
