Comparison Between Bayesian and Frequentist Tail Probability Estimates

چکیده
Tail probability plays an important part in the extreme value theory. Sometimes conclusions from two approaches for estimating tail of events, Bayesian and frequentist methods, can differ a lot. In 1999, rainfall that caused more than 30,000 deaths Venezuela was not captured by simple techniques. However, this catastrophic surprising if inference used to allow parameter uncertainty full available data exploited [4]. paper, we investigate reasons estimator is always higher estimator. Sufficient conditions phenomenon are established both using Jensen’s Inequality looking at Taylor series approximations, which point convexity distribution function.

Frequentist accuracy of Bayesian estimates.
In the absence of relevant prior experience, popular Bayesian estimation techniques usually begin with some form of "uninformative" prior distribution intended to have minimal inferential influence. Bayes rule will still produce nice-looking estimates and credible intervals, but these lack the logical force attached to experience-based priors and require further justification. This paper concer...
متن کاملComparison of Estimates Using Record Statistics from Lomax Model: Bayesian and Non Bayesian Approaches
This paper address the problem of Bayesian estimation of the parameters, reliability and hazard function in the context of record statistics values from the two-parameter Lomax distribution. The ML and the Bayes estimates based on records are derived for the two unknown parameters and the survival time parameters, reliability and hazard functions. The Bayes estimates are obtained based on conju...
متن کاملBayesian and frequentist approaches
Though the Bayesian vs. frequentist debate is largely muted in the statistics community, it continues among those applying advanced statistical methods in the physical sciences. The debate often misses some salient features on both sides, relying on simplistic arguments based on some single aspect of the methodology such as p-values or priors. The discussion here argues that each approach has s...
متن کاملReconciling Bayesian and Frequentist
For the one-sided hypothesis testing problem it is shown that it is possible to reconcile Bayesian evidence against HO' expressed in terms of the posterior probability that HO is true, with frequentist evidence against HO' expressed in terms of the p-value. In fact, for many classes of prior distributions it is shown that the infimum of the Bayesian posterior probability of HO is either equal t...
متن کاملProbability Inequalities and Tail Estimates for Metric Semigroups
We study probability inequalities leading to tail estimates in a general semigroup G with a translation-invariant metric dG . Using recent work [Ann. Prob., to appear] that extends the Hoffmann-Jørgensen inequality to all metric semigroups, we obtain tail estimates and approximate bounds for sums of independent semigroup-valued random variables, their moments, and decreasing rearrangements. In ...
