Compatibility of Automated Vehicles in Street Spaces: Considerations for a Sustainable Implementation

Automated Vehicles (AVs) will bring a fundamental change in the mobility sector coming years. Whereas many studies emphasize opportunities with AVs, on impacts of AVs travel behavior particularly show an overall increase traffic volume. This could impair needs other uses and users within street spaces decrease permeability space for pedestrians cyclists. However, only few studies, so far, have looked at changes volume due to level, what extent these different was not focus all. paper investigates compatibility spaces, building modeling results scenarios based Multi-Agent Traffic Simulation (MATSim) framework. Using so-called compensatory approach whole network Vienna, Austria, as case study, we examine how compatible their related are users, i.e., cyclists, by specifically considering various characteristics latter. Results that effects would be unevenly distributed across city. For Shared (SAVs), deterioration is observable, especially inner-city dense areas, because already high amount competing uses.
