Complex community responses underpin biodiversity change following invasion

چکیده
Abstract How do invasive species change native biodiversity? One reason why this long-standing question remains challenging to answer could be because the main focus of invasion literature has been on shifts in richness (a measure ?-diversity). As underlying components community structure—intraspecific aggregation, interspecific density and abundance distribution (SAD)—are potentially impacted different ways during invasion, trends provide only limited insight into mechanisms leading biodiversity change. In addition, these impacts can manifested distinct at spatial scales. Here we take advantage new Measurement Biodiversity (MoB) framework reanalyse data collected an front Brazilian Cerrado hotspot. We show that, by using MoB multi-scale approach, are able link reductions invaded sites restructuring SAD. This takes form lower evenness pines relative without pines. Shifts aggregation also occur. There is a clear signature scale linked presence species. These results demonstrate how approach play important role helping ecologists, field biologists conservation managers move towards more mechanistic detecting interpreting changes ecological systems following invasion.

Biodiversity and landuse change: understanding the complex responses of an endemicrich bird assemblage
Methods We sampled bird assemblages in 220 point counts, stratified across three regions and four land-use types. Species richness was examined using accumulation curves and generalized linear mixed-effect models. Compositional and structural changes were analysed with ordination techniques. We used correlations and model selection to identify species traits and environmental variables associat...
متن کاملEco-evolutionary responses of biodiversity to climate change
Climate change is predicted to alter global species diversity1, the distribution of human pathogens2 and ecosystem services3. Forecasting these changes and designing adequate management of future ecosystem services will require predictive models encompassing the most fundamental biotic responses. However, most present models omit important processes such as evolution and competition4,5. Here we...
متن کاملEutrophication and Dreissena Invasion as Drivers of Biodiversity: A Century of Change in the Mollusc Community of Oneida Lake
Changes in nutrient loading and invasive species are among the strongest human-driven disturbances in freshwater ecosystems, but our knowledge on how they affect the biodiversity of lakes is still limited. We conducted a detailed historical analysis of the mollusc community of Oneida Lake based on our comprehensive lakewide study in 2012 and previous surveys dating back to 1915. In the early 20...
متن کاملUnderstanding complex biogeographic responses to climate change
Predicting the extent and direction of species' range shifts is a major priority for scientists and resource managers. Seminal studies have fostered the notion that biological systems responding to climate change-impacted variables (e.g., temperature, precipitation) should exhibit poleward range shifts but shifts contrary to that expectation have been frequently reported. Understanding whether ...
متن کاملCommon genetic influences underpin religiosity, community integration, and existential uncertainty
Although genetic factors underpin individual differences in religiosity, the psychological mechanisms through which such influences are manifested are presently unknown. Religiosity is associated with concerns for community integration and existential certainty, suggesting that heritable influences underlying such sentiments may overlap with heritable influences underpinning religiosity. Here w...
