Complex Linkage between Watershed Attributes and Surface Water Quality: Gaining Insight via Path Analysis

Understanding the influence of various variables on surface water quality is extremely important for protecting ecosystem health. The principal aim this study to assess direct (DE), indirect (IE) and total effects (TE) socio-economic, terrestrial hydrological factors via path analysis through lens 15 sub-basins located Indus basin, Pakistan. Four models were selected based Comparative Fit Index (CFI) = 0.999 value. First model showed that rangelands having low population density decline river runoff which decreases instream Electrical Conductivity (EC) because lower anthropogenic activities. Second depicted croplands higher enhance due irrigation tail discharge EC dilution. Third with increases NO3 concentration unscientific application water. Fourth unveiled Gross Domestic Product (GDP) concentration. To protect health, Best Management Practices (BMPs), precision farming modern techniques should be adopted reduce discharges containing pollutants entry in River.
