Comprehensive characterization of sooting butane jet flames, Part 2: Temperature and soot particle size

The present work investigates the effect of jet-exit Reynolds number (Re) on soot particle size and flame temperature in n-butane jet flames. Correlation with volume fraction (fv), precursor (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAH), reaction zone (OH) is also examined. investigated flames (Re=5000–21,500) are identical as companion (Part 1). was measured a low-sooting region using fine-wire thermocouple. distribution obtained scanning mobility sizer (SMPS). Temporal evolution (with 0.1s resolution) fv extracted aerosol sample monitored Pegasor sensor (PPS). from LII PPS compared, reasons for differences discussed detail. radial location peak biased towards fuel-rich side. At Re5000, peak-PAH occurs at 650K, whereas lifted turbulent (Re21,500), shifts to 940K. PAH formation influenced by air/fuel mixing. Despite variation turbulence level (Re=5000−21,500), peak-fv inception nearly 1400K. Peak-fv lower increasing height, likely due oxidation diffused OH. mode diameter (Dm) along axis. Dm increases height reaches maximum near region. moderate Re (5000−7200), varies between 12 28 nm high (21,500), range decreases 12−24nm. decrease peak-Dm reduced residence time enhanced reactant comprehensive database containing wide parameters 1) papers will aid development validation chemistry models, especially fuels practical relevance.
