“Concept mapping – an innovative approach to learning”

Background:For a medical student to blossom into competent doctor with critical thinkingand decision-making skills, appropriate learning techniques that will enhance his anddevelop higher-order thinking skills are needed. Concept mapping is technique thatcreates mind map. It serves represent information in structured format linkage and sequencing.
 Objective:This article describes concept workshop wasorganized our institution, pre- post-test results the feedback we received.
 Materialsand methods:An innovative on “Learning by mapping” was organized forfirst year MBBS students. Twelve facilitators 150 students participated. The workshopbegan an introductory talk mapping. Then, demonstration how createconcept maps given. This followed hands – session where createdtheir own under guidance of facilitators. Pre- post-tests were administeredand taken.
 Results Discussion:Statistical analysis showedsignificant improvement betweenpre- scores. Participants appreciated workshopand felt way could help assimilatingcomplicated subject matter.
 Conclusion:Concept mapping, asa technique, can lead toa meaningful experience. Such approaches welcomed bystudents.
