Conceptual and methodological issues in structured population models of plants

چکیده
Structured projection models (SPMs) are a powerful tool to investigate the dynamics of structured populations, which makes them ideal for study plant species spanning their range life forms, sizes, longevity, and cycle complexity. They one most versatile tools in ecology, with hundreds studied so far wide variety alternative formulations different questions purposes. We revise some salient conceptual methodological issues construction use SPMs including both discrete matrix continuous integral models. Consideration is given selection state variable estimation parameters, especially those involving transitions difficult observe field, such as quantification offspring production rarely observed mortality individuals towards end cycle. Due growing importance investigating population trends rapidly changing world, we highlight populations under environmental influences and/or away from expected equilibrium. The presumed role density receives special attention because it often correlates features environment, thus potentially confounding two effects. Similarly, disentangling various effects poses challenges its own, making prove causality. alternatives available illustrated considering variables, samples, model type suitable specific

Pain in infancy: conceptual and methodological issues.
The concept of pain in infancy was explored. It was suggested that our every day usage of the term pain be applied to infants. Essentially this suggestion is that we infer that an infant has a subjective experience that is unpleasant when there is evidence of tissue damage and the infant responds with signs of distress, such as crying, increased heart rate, facial expression consistent with dis...
متن کاملBehavioral phenotypes: conceptual and methodological issues.
Specific behavioral patterns associated with chromosomal and genetic disorders are being recognized more frequently. The hope is that the demonstration of a behavioral phenotype with a particular syndrome may lead to the isolation of the behavior's genetic determinants. Three issues are considered here: the problem of defining a behavioral phenotype, the difficulty of demonstrating the existenc...
متن کاملConceptual and methodological biases in network models.
Many natural and biological phenomena can be depicted as networks. Theoretical and empirical analyses of networks have become prevalent. I discuss theoretical biases involved in the delineation of biological networks. The network perspective is shown to dissolve the distinction between regulatory architecture and regulatory state, consistent with the theoretical impossibility of distinguishing ...
