چکیده

Changes in precipitation regimes and nitrogen deposition levels due to global change are altering terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. Most attempts at understanding how biotic interactions affect plant species community responses have focused on measured the level. However, these approaches ignore that communities include functionally dissimilar might respond differently changes effects of dominant neighbours along environmental gradients. We test hypothesis with differences functional traits may exhibit contrasting a shrub within single community, thereby stabilizing community-level change. manipulated water applications semi-arid dune northern China, quantified biomass herbaceous occurring below shrub, Artemisia ordosica, adjacent open patches (without shrub), height leaf dry matter content. The A. ordosica were species, group using relative interaction index (RII). Redundancy analysis was performed RII values assess relationships between plant–plant interactions. Photosynthetic responses of tropical tree species from different successional groups under contrasting irradiance conditions

(Photosynthetic responses of tropical tree species from different successional groups under contrasting irradiance conditions). This study evaluated the photosynthetic responses of seven tropical trees of different successional groups under contrasting irradiance conditions, taking into account changes in gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence. Although early successional species have show...

Differential physiological responses to environmental change promote woody shrub expansion

Direct and indirect effects of warming are increasingly modifying the carbon-rich vegetation and soils of the Arctic tundra, with important implications for the terrestrial carbon cycle. Understanding the biological and environmental influences on the processes that regulate foliar carbon cycling in tundra species is essential for predicting the future terrestrial carbon balance in this region....

Contrasting responses of Central Asian rock glaciers to global warming

While the responses of Tien Shan glaciers--and glaciers elsewhere--to climatic changes are becoming increasingly well understood, this is less the case for permafrost in general and for rock glaciers in particular. We use a novel approach to describe the climate sensitivity of rock glaciers and to reconstruct periods of high and low rock glacier activity in the Tien Shan since 1895. Using more ...

Marine ecosystem responses to Cenozoic global change.

The future impacts of anthropogenic global change on marine ecosystems are highly uncertain, but insights can be gained from past intervals of high atmospheric carbon dioxide partial pressure. The long-term geological record reveals an early Cenozoic warm climate that supported smaller polar ecosystems, few coral-algal reefs, expanded shallow-water platforms, longer food chains with less energy...

Polley: Crop Responses to Global Change

agriculture is to feed the world’s burgeoning population, yields of water-limited crops must be improved substanYield of water-limited crops is determined by crop water use and tially. Efforts to accomplish this have concentrated on by plant water use efficiency, each of which will be affected by the anticipated rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration increasing the fraction of a...
