Review Conversion motor paralysis disorder: overview and rehabilitation model
It is important to consider a dierential diagnosis between paralysis on an organic basis and paralysis and disability due to psychological mechanisms in people with physical impairment secondary to trauma, without evidence of organic etiology. We review the most dramatic type of conversion disorder (CD) ± `Conversion Motor Paralysis'. Recent important medical literature concerning the accepted...
متن کاملRehabilitation of conversion paralysis.
Three patients referred for rehabilitation of brachial plexus lesions and two referred with leg weakness associated with sciatica were found to have conversion paralysis. The diagnosis was made by demonstrating normal motor nerve conduction to the clinically weak muscles. The weakness was treated by intensive physical rehabilitation with complete and sustained recovery in all cases.
متن کاملSuccessful rehabilitation in conversion paralysis.
A rehabilitation programme for patients with conversion paralysis has been introduced in which they are offered physical rehabilitation. During an eight month period between October 1984 and May 1985 six patients who had been diagnosed as dependent on wheelchairs owing to conversion paralysis for a mean of 3 years (range 1-6 years) were entered into the inpatient neurorehabilitation programme. ...
متن کاملNeural correlates of conversion disorder: overview and meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies on motor conversion disorder
BACKGROUND Conversion Disorders (CD) are prevalent functional disorders. Although the pathogenesis is still not completely understood, an interaction of genetic, neurobiological, and psychosocial factors is quite likely. The aim of this study is to provide a systematic overview on imaging studies on CDs and investigate neuronal areas involved in Motor Conversion Disorders (MCD). METHODS A sys...
متن کاملMotor inhibition in hysterical conversion paralysis
Brain mechanisms underlying hysterical conversion symptoms are still poorly known. Recent hypotheses suggested that activation of motor pathways might be suppressed by inhibitory signals based on particular emotional situations. To assess motor and inhibitory brain circuits during conversion paralysis, we designed a go-nogo task while a patient underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (f...
