Coping with complexity: Ballot position effects in the Finnish open-list proportional representation system

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Many studies show that the order of candidates’ names on ballot has an effect voting. Less informed and indifferent voters may simplify voting process by using position candidates as a cue. By studying six parliamentary elections in Finland, this study first demonstrates relationship between preference votes follows reversed J-shaped curve. Candidates listed early win most votes, while near end have advantage over those middle. Furthermore, grows stronger with complexity electoral environment. The increases number party list increases, candidates-to-seats ratio incumbents decreases.

On Computing Optimal Strategies in Open List Proportional Representation: The Two Parties Case

Open list proportional representation is an election mechanism used in many elections, including the 2012 Hong Kong Legislative Council Geographical Constituencies election. In this paper, we assume that there are just two parties in the election, and that the number of votes that a list would get is the sum of the numbers of votes that the candidates in the list would get if each of them would...

On the complexity of achieving proportional representation

We demonstrate that winner selection in two prominent proportional representation voting systems is a computationally intractable problem—implying that these systems are impractical when the assembly is large. On a different note, in settings where the size of the assembly is constant, we show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time.

Computational Complexity of Testing Proportional Justified Representation

We consider a committee voting setting in which each voter approves of a subset of candidates and based on the approvals, a target number of candidates are selected. Aziz et al. (2015) proposed two representation axioms called justified representation and extended justified representation. Whereas the former can be tested as well as achieved in polynomial time, the latter property is coNP-compl...

Optimal viewing position effects in reading Finnish

The present study examined effects of the initial landing position in words on eye behavior during reading of long and short Finnish compound words. The study replicated OVP and IOVP effects previously found in French, German and English - languages structurally distinct from Finnish, suggesting that the effects generalize across structurally different alphabetic languages. The results are cons...

The Complexity of Fully Proportional Representation for Single-Crossing Electorates

We study the complexity of winner determination in single-crossing elections under two classic fully proportional representation rules—Chamberlin–Courant’s rule and Monroe’s rule. Winner determination for these rules is known to be NP-hard for unrestricted preferences. We show that for single-crossing preferences this problem admits a polynomial-time algorithm for Chamberlin–Courant’s rule, but...
