Credibility Dynamics and Inflation Expectations

چکیده

We study the optimal design of a disinflation plan by planner who lacks commitment and has imperfect control over inflation. The government’s reputation for being committed to evolves as public compares realized inflation announced targets. Reputation is valuable it helps curb expectations. At same time, plans that are more tempting break lead larger expected reputational losses in ensuing equilibrium. Taking these dynamics into consideration, government announces which balances promises low with dynamic incentives make them credible. find that, despite absence inertia private economy, gradual preferred even zero-reputation limit.

Credibility and Targeting Expected Inflation

This paper evaluates inflation targeting in the context of recent theoretical developments concerning the issue of creditability. The first part of the paper argues that the problems of operational and political credibility inherent in a reputation based inflation targeting policy would be avoided by a rule based inflation expectation targeting policy. The second part of the paper demonstrates ...

The dynamics of UK and US inflation expectations

The relationship between short term and long term inflation expectations in the US and the UK is investigated with a focus on inflation pass through (i.e. how changes in short term expectations affect long term expectations). An econometric methodology is used which allows for the uncovering of the relationship between inflation pass through and various explanatory variables. Empirical results ...

Historical U.S. Money Growth, Inflation, and Inflation Credibility

and quantity indexes are calculated separately for components of GDP and therefore the difference between nominal GDP and real GDP growth is only approximately equal to the change in the GDP price index. With fixed-weights, the GDP deflator is defined as the ratio of nominal to real GDP and hence the gap between nominal and real GDP growth rates is precisely equal to the growth rate in the GDP ...

Can Rational Expectations Sticky-Price Models Explain Inflation Dynamics?

The canonical inflation specification in sticky-price rational expectations models (the new-Keynesian Phillips curve) is often criticized on the grounds that it fails to account for the dependence of inflation on its own lags. In response, many recent studies have employed a “hybrid” sticky-price specification in which inflation depends on a weighted average of lagged and expected future values...

Discussion of Fuhrer , “ The Role of Expectations in Inflation Dynamics ”

Rational expectations are at the heart of the DSGE models maintained by central banks. A key equation which governs the evolution of prices in those models is the New Keynesian Phillips (NKPC) curve, in which today‟s rate of inflation is linked to expected future inflation. Expected future inflation is in turn modeled using rational expectations, which operationally means that forecast errors a...
