Crustal structure in southern and central West Bengal using deep seismic sounding explosion data

Deep seismic sounding (DSS) data provides an excellent opportunity to accurately delineate the crustal structure of a given region owing fact that location and origin time source (Chemical explosion) are available. India Meteorological Department is carrying out such surveys since early 1970's. In this paper. wave velocities in upper part crust southern central West Bengal estimated from three DSS field conducted during 1987-1990. From analysis it noted sedimentary layer consists mainly two layers. The first thickness 1.25 1.49 km with P velocity 2.85 2.88 km/s S-wave 1.71 1.77 km/s. Surface show near Burdwan, includes thin low 250 m at top. lowest increases southward 2.32 3.73 : P-wave between 3.9 & 4.1 layers overlying granitic P- 5.73 5.83
