Crystallization in Fluidized Bed Reactors: From Fundamental Knowledge to Full-Scale Applications

A review is presented on fifty years of research crystallization in fluidized bed reactors (FBRs). FBRs are suitable for recovery slightly soluble compounds from aqueous solutions, as it yields large, millimeter sized particles, which reuse and permits low liquid residence times the timescale minutes. Full-scale applications water softening have been applied since 1980s, then, new developed or development phosphorus, magnesium, fluoride, metals, sulfate, boron. Process integration with membrane, adsorption, biological processes led to improved environmental indicators. Recently, novel FBR concepts proposed, such aerated chemical-free precipitation calcium carbonate, seedless yield pure particulate products, a circulating economic extended use seeds, well coupled separation chiral supercritical fluids. Advances reported understanding elementary phenomena mathematical models fluid dynamics, kinetics, systems. Their role highlighted process understanding, optimization control at bench full-scale. Future challenges discussed.
