Crystallographic analysis of nano-tendril bundle vs fuzz growth on tungsten exposed to helicon wave-coupled helium plasma

چکیده
The propensity for nano-tendril bundle (NTB) vs widespread growth (i.e., fuzz) on polycrystalline W under varying ion energy modulation conditions, from DC to peak-to-peak of 42 eV at 13.56 MHz, is correlated with the crystal orientation underlying grains. Grains that are vicinal orientations high surface diffusivity (e.g., {101} a body centered cubic structure) exhibit NTB lower amplitude than grains low orientations, such as {100}. Adatom mobility considerations presented describe experimental observations. These results support diffusion or adatom enhanced by bombardment plays key role in morphology evolution He irradiation.

Direct time-resolved observation of tungsten nanostructured growth due to helium plasma exposure
Determination of the mechanisms underlying the growth of tungsten fuzz is an important step towards mitigation of fuzz formation. Nanostructured tungsten was produced on resistively heated tungsten wires in a helicon plasma source (maximum flux of 2.5× 1021 m−2 s−1). Asymmetry in the setup allows for investigation of temperature and flux effects in a single sample. An effort at elucidating the ...
متن کاملComparison of tungsten nano-tendrils grown in Alcator C- Mod and linear plasma devices
Growth of tungsten nano-tendrils (“fuzz”) has been observed for the first time in the divertor region of a high-power density tokamak experiment. After 14 consecutive helium L-mode discharges in Alcator C-Mod, the tip of a tungsten Langmuir probe at the outer strike point was fully covered with a layer of nano-tendrils. The depth of the W fuzz layer (600 ± 150 nm) is consistent with an empirica...
متن کاملDamage studies on irradiated tungsten by helium and argon ions in a plasma focus device
Damage of tungsten due to helium and argon ions of a PF device was studied. Tungsten samples were irradiated by 20 shots of the plasma focus device with argon and helium as working gases, separately. The tungsten surface was analyzed by SEM, before and after irradiation. SEM revealed dense blisters with diameters of a few hundred nanometers, on the samples which were irradiated by helium ions, ...
متن کاملNanostructured fuzz growth on tungsten under low-energy and high-flux He irradiation
We report the formation of wave-like structures and nanostructured fuzzes in the polycrystalline tungsten (W) irradiated with high-flux and low-energy helium (He) ions. From conductive atomic force microscope measurements, we have simultaneously obtained the surface topography and current emission images of the irradiated W materials. Our measurements show that He-enriched and nanostructured st...
متن کاملWave propagation and power deposition in magnetically enhanced inductively coupled and helicon plasma sources
Magnetically enhanced inductively coupled plasma ~MEICP! and helicon sources for materials processing are of interest because of their ability to deposit power within the volume of the plasma beyond the classical skin depth. The location and manner of power deposition can vary substantially depending on the mode of operation and reactor conditions. The coupling of electromagnetic fields to the ...
