چکیده

Patients with inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) utilize various adaptive techniques and devices designed to assist them activities of daily living (ADLs). The purpose this study was assess the assistive used by patients IRDs, difficulties they face despite these devices, their recommendations for a future visual prosthesis. In collaboration blind patients, an online survey developed administered adults IRDs acuities 20/400 no light perception in better-seeing eye. We analyzed data from 121 respondents (aged 18 >80 years). Five were Argus II prosthesis recipients. most commonly aids cellular phones/tablets reading (63.6%) as well sighted guide (75.0%) cane (71.4%) mobility. Despite current participants reported continued difficulty ADLs. Improved navigation, reading, facial recognition ranked desirable features prostheses. recipients suggested technology improved ability recognize objects obstacles, detect movement, cut out busy backgrounds. These insights are valuable shaping design prosthetic tailored needs IRD patients.

Blindness and visual impairment due to retinal diseases

General overview on retinal diseases A global epidemic of diabetes mellitus Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Diabetes may be insulin-dependent, which is typically of early onset, or non insulindependent, when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces (maturity onset diabetes)...

Liver impairment among neonates with moderate to severe asphyxia

Background and Objectives: Perinatal asphyxia may cause severe damages in different organs such as kidneys, lungs, liver and most importantly CNS. The current study aimed to evaluate and compare the prevalence of liver impairment among asphyxiated and normal neonates. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was carried out in a referral pediatrics Hospital (Iran- from 2013 to 2015). Term an...

Current and future therapies for inherited cholestatic liver diseases

Familial intrahepatic cholestasis (FIC) comprises a group of rare cholestatic liver diseases associated with canalicular transport defects resulting predominantly from mutations in ATP8B1, ABCB11 and ABCB4. Phenotypes range from benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC), associated with recurrent cholestatic attacks, to progressive FIC (PFIC). Patients often suffer from severe pruritus a...

Reading Visual Braille with a Retinal Prosthesis

Retinal prostheses, which restore partial vision to patients blinded by outer retinal degeneration, are currently in clinical trial. The Argus II retinal prosthesis system was recently awarded CE approval for commercial use in Europe. While retinal prosthesis users have achieved remarkable visual improvement to the point of reading letters and short sentences, the reading process is still fairl...

Predicting visual sensitivity in retinal prosthesis patients.

PURPOSE With the long-term goal of restoring functional vision in patients with retinal degenerative diseases, the eyes of blind human subjects were implanted chronically with epiretinal prostheses consisting of two-dimensional electrode arrays that directly stimulated cells of the neural retina. METHODS Psychophysical techniques were used to measure the brightness of electrically generated p...
