Decadal climate sensitivity of contouritic sedimentation in a dynamically coupled ice-ocean-sediment model of the North Atlantic

چکیده
Ocean sediment drifts contain important information about past bottom currents but a direct link between the study of sedimentary archives and ocean dynamics is not always possible. To close this gap for North Atlantic, we set up new coupled Ice-Ocean-Sediment Model N. Atlantic - Arctic region. In order to evaluate potential model, conducted decadal sensitivity experiments. our model contouritic sedimentation shows significant towards climate variability most contourite drift locations in domain. We observe general decrease rates during warm conditions with decreasing atmospheric oceanic gradients an extensive increase cold respective increased gradients. can relate these results changes dominant circulation supplying deep water masses sites under different conditions. A better understanding northern pathways Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) crucial evaluating possible consequences change ocean.

A simple coupled model of tropical Atlantic decadal climate variability
[1] A linear, zonally averaged model of the interaction between the tropical Atlantic (TA) atmosphere and ocean is presented. A balance between evaporation and meridional heat advection in the mixed layer determines the sea surface temperature tendency. The atmosphere is a fixeddepth, sub-cloud layer in which the specific humidity anomaly is determined by a steady-state balance between evaporat...

The observed recent freshening trend in the deep North Atlantic and the Labrador Sea is investigated in three forced ensembles and a long control simulations using the HadCM3 coupled ocean–atmosphere–sea-ice climate model. The 40 yr freshening trend during the late half of the 20th century is captured in the all forcings ensemble that applies all major external (natural and anthropogenic) forci...
متن کاملDecadal Variabilities of the Upper Layers of the Subtropical North Atlantic: An Ocean Model Study
Numerical simulations of the Atlantic Ocean during the period 1950 to 1989, using a sigma coordinate, free surface numerical model, show long-term variabilities in the upper ocean subtropical gyre similar to those obtained from observations. The simulations show how westward propagating planetary waves, originated in the eastern North Atlantic, affect interdecadal variabilities of ocean propert...
متن کاملDecadal variability of the North Atlantic in an ocean general circulation model
Climatic fluctuations on a decadal timescale in the North Atlantic in a global ocean general circulation model were considered. The analysis was carried out for the 3800-year stochastic forcing simulation of Mikolajewicz and Maier-Reimer in which the Hamburg LargeScale Geostrophic ocean model was driven by monthly climatologies of wind stress, air temperature, and freshwater flux with superimpo...
متن کاملSimulations of Hydrographic Properties in the Northwestern North Atlantic Ocean in Coupled Climate Models
The performance of coupled climate models (CCMs) in simulating the hydrographic structure and variability of the northwestern North Atlantic Ocean, in particular the Labrador and Irminger Seas, has been assessed. This area plays an important role in the meridional overturning circulation. Hydrographic properties of the preindustrial run of eight CCMs used in the Intergovernmental Panel on Clima...
