Cut vertices, a generalization of matrix elements of local operators, are revisited, and an expansion in terms of minimally subtracted cut vertices is formulated. An extension of the formalism to deal with semi-inclusive deep inelastic processes in the target fragmentation region is explicitly constructed. The problem of factorization is discussed in detail.

The existing data for hadron structure functions, F 2 (x, Q 2), show considerable Q 2-dependence, which is mainly attributed to the QCD logarithmic corrections to Bjorken scaling. We show that the Politzer theorem on the equations of motion implies approximate constraints on the quark correlator. These, in turn, restrict considerably, for sufficiently large Q 2 , the number of independent distribution functions that characterize the internal structure of the nucleon, and of independent fragmentation functions.
