Self-affine elastic contacts: percolation and leakage.
We study fluid flow at the interfaces between elastic solids with randomly rough, self-affine surfaces. We show by numerical simulation that elastic deformation lowers the relative contact area at which contact patches percolate in comparison to traditional approaches to seals. Elastic deformation also suppresses leakage through contacts even far away from the percolation threshold. Reliable es...
متن کاملOn Analytical Study of Self-Affine Maps
Self-affine maps were successfully used for edge detection, image segmentation, and contour extraction. They belong to the general category of patch-based methods. Particularly, each self-affine map is defined by one pair of patches in the image domain. By minimizing the difference between these patches, the optimal translation vector of the self-affine map is obtained. Almost all image process...
متن کاملPercolation thresholds on elongated lattices
We investigate the percolation thresholds of both random and invasion percolation in two and three dimensions on elongated lattices; lattices with a geometry of Ld−1 × nL in d dimensions, where n denotes the aspect ratio of the lattice. Scaling laws for the threshold and spanning cluster density for random percolation are derived and simulation confirms the behaviour. A direct relationship betw...
متن کاملDynamic friction of self-affine surfaces
We investigate the velocity dependence of the friction between two rigid blocks limited by a self-affine surface such as the one generated by a crack. The upper solid is subjected either to gravity or to an extemal elastic stiffness, and is driven horizontally at constant velocity, V, while the lower solid is fixed. For low velocities, the apparent friction coefficient is constant. For high vel...
متن کاملNon - singular affine surfaces with self - maps
We classify surjective self-maps (of degree at least two) of affine surfaces according to the log Kodaira dimension. In this paper we are interested in the following question. Question. Classify all smooth affine surfaces X/C which admit a proper morphism f : X → X with degree f > 1. In [5] and [18], a classification of smooth projective surfaces with a self-map of degree > 1 has been given. Th...
